Lily Aldridge Proves the Power in Shopping Your Closet

From denim cutoffs to Perfectos and motorcycle boots, if you’re a model off-duty, some things never go out of style. Case in point? The field jacket, which seemed to be required wearing for catwalkers over the past decade. The cheap-and-easy topper, often picked up at vintage markets or army surplus stores, was the perfect piece for a girl on the go, whether she was rushing to a show or to a casting. Thrown on over a white tank top and skinny jeans in an inscouiant, slouchy manner, it also added the right amount of low-key contrast thanks to the army green hue. Over time, the ubiquitous jacket became the perfect chic, fail-safe shroud for models everywhere. These days, in which models are encouraged to promote their personality rather than solely their appearance, the blend-in staple hasn’t been on the street nearly as much. Instead, model off-duty style has been dominated by those who favor streetwear with a bad-girl flair, or those who, like Hanne Gaby Odiele, push the limit in outré, costume-like looks.

But the army field jacket hasn’t gone rogue: It made a high-profile comeback over the past week thanks to Victoria’s Secret model Lily Aldridge. The supermodel first wore the field jacket as part of her daytime attire, throwing the camo piece over a black tank and faded skinny jeans with a pair of black Air Forces Ones. Aldridge recently wore the jacket again for a night out on the town. In an unlikely ensemble, Aldridge used the camo to add a touch of grunge to her polished, Alexander Wang shift dress and slick Saint Laurent boots. Looks like the next biggest thing on the street may already be in your closet.
