Model Candice Swanepoel Shares Her Summer Essentials

Swim season’s here! While we’ve got you set with the summer’s trendiest suits, the matter of beach-ready fitness and confidence requires some expert attention. So we hit up (who else?) model Candice Swanepoel at the Victoria’s Secret summer kick-off party for her master advice. Read on for her top tips!

Your work as an Angel (and cover girl for the Victoria’s Secret swimwear catalog!) certainly makes you a beach style expert. What do you look for in a swimsuit?

Because I’m so active on the beach, I like them small, but they still need to be made of good material. I look for nice colors, and I need to be able to surf and swim without my suit moving around!

Do you have a favorite color for swimwear?

I like blue and yellow! Victoria’s Secret has some cool patterns that you can mix and match—like a solid bottom and a printed top. It’s good to change it up and feel different every time you put on a suit.

What are your other summer staples?

For New York City, I like to have some good sneakers since walking in sandals gets a bit nasty. I also really like comfortable shorts, T-shirts, and jeans.

What are your beach styling tips?

When I pack for the beach, I always have different scarves and sarongs that I can double-up by wrapping around my waist or my head. I pack pretty simply, but I take a lot of accessories that are fun to play with, like different sunglᴀsses.

What advice do you have for how to be confident in a swimsuit?

It’s important to work out because you always feel better when you do. Get a good coverup—Victoria’s Secret has beautiful coverups that are good to have if you’re feeling a little self-conscious. But even if you don’t feel that confident, the real secret is just fake it!

Tell us about your summer fitness prep.

I’ve been trying out a couple of different things lately because I got bored of just doing the same routine! I love to try new classes—I recently tried a jump rope class at Aerospace. I like boxing and ballet. I also tried Pilates on the machine, which I really like!

What is your warm-weather beauty routine like?

Less is more! Wear a little bronzer, and have something to tie your hair back with.
